Light ! The adventure continues: a wonderful journey through time (critic)

Thierry Frémaux continues to share his passion for the Lumière brothers, with a playful and malicious pedagogy that will seduce the laymen as much as the connoisseurs.

It all started 8 years ago, based on the desire of Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Festival and Managing Director of the Lumière Institute, to bring back in theaters, where they took off, the films of the Auguste and Louis Lumière brothers. And thus, by ricochet to accompany their restorations. Light, adventure begins had then created the surprise by bringing together nearly 130,000 spectators. It was therefore logical that the adventure continues. And Thierry Frémaux persists and therefore signs with this new trip to the plethoric work (2000 films of 50 seconds) of the two brothers inventors of cinema.

The ambition remains the same: offering some of their nuggets on the big screen (120 here, completely unpublished when the first opus focused on the best known) specially restored for the occasion and accompanied by sumptuous – and never overwhelming – music of their contemporary Gabriel Fauré. But also and above all re -situating them in context, showing and explaining how their staging and framing ideas then infused their successors.

An exercise to which Thierry Frémaux – an eminent connoisseur of the subject – is used with a fun and malicious pedagogy which leaves no one on the edge of the path and will seduce the laymen as well as the connoisseurs. A feast for eyes and ears therefore, to its last post-generic scene! And the best ways to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the seventh art!
