Keri Russell shares her passionate story with Matthew Rhys in the dressing room of The Americans

The two actors fell in love while playing a couple of Russian spies in the FX series. Keri Russell reveals today that they took advantage of their disguises to live out their romance intensely between two takes.

Elizabeth and Philip Jennings weren’t the only ones leading double lives.

On the set of The Americans, the duo formed by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys also had a secret affair, but for much more romantic reasons. Guest of the Dear Chelsea podcast, the actress looked back on the beginnings of their relationship, which began when they shared the poster of the series.

“We were falling in love with each other at the time. We stayed up all night and had sex all the time, all while wearing our costumes from the show… I had crazy wigs and pearl necklaces! When have you ever worn pearls while having sex in dressing rooms? Or anywhere else really? It was crazy. It was so fun, secret, sexy… and so good.”

During the six seasons of The Americans, broadcast between 2013 and 2018, the two actors played Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, a couple of KGB agents infiltrated in the suburbs of Washington, in the 1980s. Their clandestine missions regularly forced them to change their appearance, with wigs and improbable outfits. Accessories that the two actors have obviously been able to put to good use in their private lives.

Matthew Rhys had already told how their romance ended up being discovered by the team of the series. After a break-in at Keri Russell’s apartment, the police reported objects on the set that they thought belonged to the actress. But a production assistant had recognized that they were actually Rhys’s, revealing their relationship to the rest of the crew.

The couple has since become one of the most discreet and strongest in Hollywood. They welcomed a son in 2016 and continue to maintain their privacy.
