Kevin Costner to release director’s cut version of Dances With Wolves

The cult western will benefit from a 4K restoration and more than 30 new minutes.

More than 35 years after its release, Dance with Wolves is about to be reborn in a new version.

Kevin Costner’s masterpiece will benefit from a 4K restoration accompanied by a real “director’s cut”, which will be presented in preview at the Locarno Film Festival.

This new version, which is approaching four hours, will include more than thirty minutes of new scenes never shown to the public. Enough to rediscover in a new light this western which has become a classic of American cinema.

Released in 1990, Dance with Wolves tells the story of a Northern army officer who befriends a Lakota tribe during the Civil War. A huge critical and public success, the film won seven Oscars, including those for best film and best director for Kevin Costner, helping to relaunch the western in Hollywood while highlighting the destiny of the indigenous peoples of North America.

This restoration was carried out by the Swiss laboratory Cinegrell, in collaboration with the Locarno Festival as part of its program dedicated to the preservation of cinematographic heritage.

The world screening of this restored version will take place on August 7 in the famous Piazza Grande, the immense open-air screen of the Swiss festival. A great opportunity to rediscover one of the greatest hits of Kevin Costner’s career, in the most complete version ever presented.
