When I discovered Last Summer by Catherine Breillat, it was like a revelation: I wanted to film it urgently“, explains the director in the film’s press kit. “She explores in this film something of the order of sensuality, of abandonment, which I found magnificent and which touched me enormously. I immediately wrote him a letter to express my admiration. Then, when my script was ready, I offered her the role of Gabrielle – but she had two shoots already scheduled, and I waited a year for her!”
