Realistic and with Colin Farrell: Matt Reeves gives the first information on The Batman II

“We could go to the limits of the fantastic, but we would never go to the end of the fantastic.”

If the universe of The Batman will soon be relaunched on Max with the series The Penguina direct sequel to the 2022 film, The Batman II is still a long way off. It won’t be released in theaters until October 2026 after being pushed back a full year by Warner Bros.

But Matt Reeves already knows what he is going to do and he confirms to SFX magazine: “We are currently finishing the script. The plan is to shoot next year.”

In the process, he suggests that The Penguin will have a direct impact since “Colin Farrell will be part of the film. He will be in The Batman II. We’ve already had DC Studios and Warner read the script and they’re very excited..”

What will we talk about? The Batman II ?

Matt Reeves explains that this sequel “will dig into the theme of deep corruption. We’ll scratch the surface not seen in the first film, even if you can see all the little pebbles that lead to this second film. We’ll show aspects of the character that you’ve never seen before. Batman is constantly battling his inner demons. But those demons can’t be completely exorcised. So the next film will delve deeper into that.“.

What bad guys in The Batman II ?

As fans push for Keanu Reeves to step in as Gentleman Ghost – a literal ghostly DC Comics villain – adding a supernatural twist to the story, Matt Reeves tells SFX that this will not happen, because he wants to stay in the realistic vein of comics: “What I always wanted to do was take these pop icons, these mythical characters, and transpose Gotham in a way that felt like a place in our world. We could go to the limits of fantasy, but we would never go to the end of fantasy. We’re not going to go beyond that. The movie is supposed to be quite realistic.”

The director nevertheless promises that fans will see “characters that people love. That’s exactly what we want to do. Gentleman Ghost is probably pushed a little too far for us to find a way to bring him in. But there’s a fun way to bring these kinds of characters to the edge of the fantastical, finding a way to make their entry into this world meaningful..”
