May the 4th be with you! All the expected Star Wars films and series

On the occasion of Star Wars Day, we take a complete look at what awaits us in the years to come in the Galaxy far, far away. A priori, Lucasfilm intends to put aside streaming to regain its cinema rights…

The Force is with us today.

On this May 4, World Star Wars Day – because May the 4th be with you – we take stock of the future of the saga initiated by George Lucas half a century ago. What films and series are actually in production, even though boss Kathleen Kennedy has left the management of the studio and handed over to Dave Filoni?

The Mandalorian & Grogu

Jon Favreau’s film will be released in cinemas on May 20, 2026 in France. This will be the very first Star Wars film since the release of The Rise of Skywalker 7 years ago. An event, without a doubt, under the leadership of the director of Iron Man, who will tell the continuation of the adventures of the Mandalorian played by Pedro Pascal on a mission to protect the famous Baby Yoda…

Star Wars: Starfighter

Filming has been completed and its release has already been set for May 26, 2027 in cinemas in France. Ryan Gosling will star, the new star of the Galaxy Far Far Away, under the leadership of Shawn Levy, director of Stranger Things. The Barbie actor will play a pilot in a completely independent film, which will take place 6 or 7 years after Episode IX. But it will not be the official Episode X.

The new trilogy by Simon Kinberg

To see this Episode X you will have to wait a few more years. Because a new trilogy – Episodes X, XI and XII – is well planned, but not right away. Former screenwriter of the last X-Men films, Simon Kinberg, took charge of writing. In January 2026, before handing over, Kennedy assured that the project was very well underway: “Simon is working on it now. He wrote something that we read in August, and it was very good, but not yet finished. We largely restructured the story, then spent a lot of time on the treatment, which he completed. It’s a very detailed treatment, about 70 pages.” According to the ex-Lucasfilm boss, his successor Dave Filoni “is very involved in what Simon is doing, and this will constitute a new trilogy. In the overall timeline, it will take us well beyond 2030. But this is really what will arrive on your screens next…” The latest news is that Daisy Ridley should return to play Rey.

James Mangold’s prequel

The studio is therefore focusing for the moment on this new trilogy and could abandon the independent films in progress. Another Star Wars film set in the past and carried by the director of Logan was to show us the Galaxy at its origins, approximately 25,000 years before the events of Star Wars. James Mangold and House of Cards creator Beau Willimon have written a script, but the film is on hiatus: “Jim and Beau wrote an incredible script, but it’s really breaking the mold and it’s on hiatus. It’s really shelved at the moment.” Moreover, the filmmaker already seems to be moving towards another project, adapting his thriller Copland into a series.

Taika Waititi’s film and Donald Glover’s Lando

The director of Thor: Love & Thunder has written a funny script that is very popular (we don’t know what he’s talking about). Likewise for Atlanta actor and rapper Donald Glover, who would like to reprise the role of Lando Calrissian in a film about the pilot (which he already played in Solo). But like James Mangold’s prequel, these two projects risk being put on hold indefinitely, to make way for the new trilogy. Unless The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter are huge hits at the box office, indicating to the studio that there is an appetite for this type of parallel story… Lucasfilm still leaves itself the possibility of going to the end with these two projects: “I think that the films of Taika and Donald are still alive in a certain way, said Kennedy before leaving. Taika has produced a script that I find hilarious and excellent. It’s no longer my decision, especially with one foot already outside it will really be up to the new team to decide.”

Steven Soderbergh’s film about Ben Solo

It’s a project that never officially existed, and yet it’s the one that’s been the most talked about for a year, led by Adam Driver, eager to explore Kylo Ren in more depth. Kathleen Kennedy said at the start of the year: “Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver submitted a script written by Scott Burns. It’s truly excellent. Anything is possible if someone is willing to take risks…” Obviously, the project doesn’t exist, but if Dave Filoni wants to try his hand at it…

Ahsoka, season 2

It is the only Star Wars series currently in official development. The sequel was confirmed in January 2024. Filming took place between April and October 2025 in the United Kingdom. It is made up of eight episodes, all written by Dave Filoni. Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard directed two, while Filoni, Jennifer Getzinger and Anders Engström helmed the others. We will find Rosario Dawson facing Lars Mikkelsen aka Grand Admiral Thrawn, in the period of the New Republic, approximately 5 to 15 years after Return of the Jedi. The broadcast is expected before the end of the year on Disney+.

The series from the Lost showrunner?

No other season has been made official by Disney, which has decided to drastically reduce the scale on the small screen, with the idea of restoring Star Wars to its rightful place on the big screen. The only television project recently mentioned: Carlton Cuse, showrunner of the hit series Lost (and also behind the prequel to Psycho entitled Bates Motel) is working on a new series with his son Nick Cuse. But for now, we don’t know what it’s about, or if this idea will really come to fruition one day. It is in the cinema that George Lucas’s Galaxy is reshaping its future.
