Michael Douglas tells all about this romance that remained secret for 40 years

On the set of The Hunt for the Green Diamond, Michael Douglas and his partner Kathleen Turner fell in love. A story that they hid for more than 40 years and that the actor tells today in his memoirs.

Michael Douglas throws it all away!

More than 40 years after the filming ofChasing the green diamondthe actor reveals in his memoirs One Helluva Ride that he had a love story with Kathleen Turner, his partner in Robert Zemeckis’ film released in 1984.

In an extract from his book, published by PeopleDouglas says he was “immediately attracted” by Turner when they met in Mexico to shoot the film.

“Kathleen was smart, funny and sexy, with a deep, sensual voice that would become her signature“, he writes. The problem is that the actor, then 40 years old, was already married. At the time, his married life with Diandra Douglas, whom he had married in 1977, was already complicated. “Things were bad at home“, he justifies, specifying that they had “both have extramarital affairs“.

Michael Douglas and Diandra were still married, but separated, when he left to film Chasing the green diamond.

They did not divorce until 1995 and had a son together, Cameron Douglas.

“I never asked Diandra to change who she was, but after she fell in love with me and married me, Diandra was constantly asking me to change“, writes Douglas. “This created huge problems between uss.”

On the set, the chemistry between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner was particularly strong. For more than four decades, the two actors nevertheless always denied having had a relationship.

“Audiences were certain for years that we had a relationship during the filming of the film. But we chose to lie to protect Diandra and Cameron. But it’s true that I was completely overwhelmed by Kathleen..”

And he ends up telling the truth today:

“The truth is that during the production of Chasing the Green Diamond, Kathleen and I fell madly in love with each other and began a relationship. It wasn’t a one-night stand; our story developed naturally, from working so closely together, under such pressure, from the respect and affection we had for each other, and the attraction we felt for each other.“

Everything then took place in secret.

“Our relationship was hidden from everyone“, remembers Douglas. The actor says that he “sneaked into his hotel room” once everyone was in bed.

“Kathleen and I have never had a difficult time. We found each other first as friends, then as on-screen partners, and finally as lovers“, he writes.

The secret finally began to unravel when Diandra and Cameron came to visit. “Diandra became suspicious. A woman’s intuition, I guess“, writes Douglas. According to him, Diandra then explained to Turner, when they found themselves alone, that she was “still married” to Michael. Turner, for his part, “didn’t want to interfere“, despite the couple’s separation. She and Douglas eventually ended their relationship, and the actor returned to Diandra.

“I did it for Cameron, but we shouldn’t have gotten back together“, he wrote. “After that first separation, things were never the same between us again..”

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner then met again to In pursuit of the green diamond: The Diamond of the Nile in 1985. The actor says they began “fix” their relationship and to turn the page.

“It felt good to know we were back on solid ground again“, he writes.

The two actors remained very close. They notably shared the poster of The War of the Roses in 1989, and then, years later, Turner even joined the actor in The Kominsky Method for the final two seasons of the Netflix series, starting in 2019.

Now married to Catherine Zeta-Jones, Douglas says he asked Turner for permission before telling their story in his book. And obviously, the actress is not making a big deal out of it. Asked by People On this much-talked-about revelation, Kathleen Turner responded with amusement:

“My God, what a fuss for something that happened 40 years ago! I love Michael and can’t wait to enjoy his book.“
