Moana 2 co-director explains post-credits scene
Why didn’t this key character appear earlier in the story? Dana Ledoux Miller responds.
If Moana 2 is a new epic adventure, eight years after its first particularly successful part (it still contrasts with the usual Disney princess stories and that attracts the public in number in cinemas since its release), this sequel is still quite wobbly. One of its crucial characters in the plot only appears at the very end in his human form, but if we are to believe Dana Ledoux Millerthe co-director of the animated blockbuster with David Derrick Jr. And Jason Handthere was never any question that this appearance would take place before the mid-credits scene. She suggests that even if Moana 2 had it been developed as originally planned as a series for Disney+, the ending scene would have been the same.

Vaiana 2: a fun but anecdotal new adventure (review)
“The team never really thought about integrating Nalo in his human form earlier in the story”assures Dana Deadlinewhich details that the idea was to show this God of nature in all his power to spectators as a priority. Voiced by Tofiga Fepulea’i, he appears opposite the sea creature Tamaota (still voiced by Jemaine Clement) and Matangi, a new female character glimpsed during the plot and who we understand could gain importance later , who has the voice of Ahhimai Fraser.
“Nature is such a powerful force in the Pacific and in the stories of all these cultures, continues the co-director. Gods are always connected to nature in one way or another. We liked the idea of building an obstacle for our heroes (Moana and Maui)which is truly anchored in this reality. We also loved that the story between him and Matangi didn’t end there. When we talk about the details that were changed in this sequence, it’s more about their relationship to them, really.
In addition, the public has just experienced a frantic race full of emotions, we wanted to stay in this spirit. I think at one point the end credits scene was a little darker than the one we ended up going with. We realized that we didn’t want everyone to leave the theaters feeling like a failure. We have such fun characters that we preferred to continue having fun with them and end with this idea of wanting more. And then we also had the chance that Jemaine came back for this little cameo…”
Comments which in fact respond to another interview with Derrick Jr., in Collider this time, who explained that this post-credits scene had “evolved a lot during production. Like the rest of the story, in fact. I think the starting point was to introduce half a -God (Maui from the first Moana), then a god in this world. We really liked the idea of having a little more this time.”
