Cannes 2024: The shrouds, a romantic and spectral cronenberg
In the brand new trailer, we discover Vincent Cassel (Hatred, the three musketeers) in the role of Karsha 50 -year -old renowned businessman. Inconsolable since The death of his wifehe invents a new technology to go to the dead via digital shrouds. One night, several tombs, including that of his wife, are vandalized. Karsh then goes in search of the culprits. Diane Kruger (Troy, Inglorious Bastards) embodies Three characters : Karsh’s deceased woman, her twin and an avatar.
This techno-thriller is undoubtedly the film The most personal of David Cronenberg. The idea of this project came to him during his own phase of mourning, following The loss of his wife in 2017. The resemblance between Vincent Cassel and the 81 -year -old filmmaker is also blatant! The shrouds sign their third collaborationAfter Shadow promises (2007) and A DANGOUOUS METHOD (2011). The director of The fly had expressed himself during a press conference:
“We have all experienced loss, whether it is a pet or a friend. This idea comes to me from life itself. I am talking about the death of my wife. I stopped making films for a few years after this drama, then I felt the need to tell this story.”
“It’s my most autobiographical film”, Cronenberg confides in the shroud
In The shroudsthere are several themes dear to the filmmaker: of course technologybut above all The relationship to the body (here decomposing). However, this last feature film seems much less trash than what The master of the body-horror in the past. The casting is completed by Guy Pearce – currently on the bill of The brutalist – And Sandrine Holt (Chinese puzzle, black dress).
