News from the directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once…
The Daniels’ mystery film has just reappeared on Universal’s schedule.
Three years ago, Everything Everywhere All at Once created a surprise by becoming the first A24 film to exceed the $100 million mark in box office revenue. A few months later, this multiverse film caused a sensation at the Oscars, with seven awards including best and best director for the duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka the Daniels.
What has become of them since then? Bouncing back after such a triumph is always complicated, and the two filmmakers have been very discreet, apart from one episode of the series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (released in 2024 but actually made before the 2023 Oscars). In 2022, they had signed a five-year exclusive contract with Universal. Then in 2024 a date for their next feature film was announced: June 12, 2026.
Universal then removed this mystery film from its schedule (as they recently did with Jordan Peele’s). But he is back on the program (via Deadline), and we will now have to reach November 19, 2027 to discover their new project. Or a few days before Halloween (which will fall on the 25th that year) and Frozen 3 which will arrive in theaters on the 24th.
In 2023, the Daniels confided their dilemma to First : what type of film to follow after the cardboard Everything Everywhere All at Once?
“In fact, we are being pushed by two forces at the moment: to go in the opposite direction of the previous film – to do something smaller and simpler – but also to welcome the fact thatEverything Everywhere All at Once was successful. People liked this alchemy that we created and so we ask ourselves: what new stories can we tell with this kind of maximalist, very entertaining and very personal storytelling?”
Logically, the film should start shooting next year, and we should therefore know more in a few months. One thing is certain, the slot that Universal has assigned to them is that of an “untitled event movie”. We must therefore expect big things.
