Peacemaker: how season 2 has erased all traces of the justice league from Snydeveverse

Having become the Boss of the DC Universe in the meantime, the director has erased the end of season 1 to replace it with the Gang justice of Superman, at the opening of season 2.

The first season of Peacemaker dates from January 2022. And for three and a half years, things have happened in the world of superheroes. Warner Bros. Officially killed the Snydeverse, to put James Gunn at the controls of DC Studios. The director therefore now has the keys to the truck.

And from his first episode, season 2 of Peacemaker tackles this question: how to integrate the series into the new DC Universe by making a clean sweep of the past?

As a reminder, the final of season 1 showed Peacemaker (John Cena) and his outgoing team winners of the war against the extraterrestrials butterflies. The cavalry was late. Surging the night, the members of justice League: The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), as well as the silhouettes of Superman and Wonder Woman. Batman and Cyborg land to spin a unnecessary helping hand.

With the new direction of Gunn and Safran, the link with the Justice League of Snyder – shown briefly in the sequence, has therefore become a deciduous: “These heroes of justice League do not yet exist in the new DC Universe”, explains Gunn. “The rule is simple: if we mention something of the past in new series or films, then it happened. This is how we manage the official story of a franchise.”

It was therefore necessary to repair this error that has become anachronistic. Replace justice League. And season 2 proceeds to a clever retropedage which you may not have even realized. The sequence “¨Precedly in Peacemaker” sums up season 1 while modifying certain passages:

  • Rewriting 1: Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) calls her mother, Amanda Waller, to ask for the intervention of the justice gang rather than justice League.

  • Rewriting 2: Chris takes advantage of a moment when Economos vomits to evoke the very special habits of the Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

  • Rewriting 3: When the reinforcements arrived after the fight, Peacemaker continues to launch his famous: “You are late for asshole”. Except that this time, the visible silhouettes belong to the Gang justice: Superman, Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders, Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific and Supergirl (interpreted by David Corenswet, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi and Milly Alcock in the film Superman of Gunn).

Comic interactions are added: Hawkgirl Raille Peacemaker, Guy Gardner complains about rumors about his particular taste for vomit, and later, Kendra, Guy and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) are clumsily trying to assess Peacemaker who wants to integrate this gang justice.

With these adjustments, Peacemaker succeeds in erasing the traces of Snyreveverse while laying the foundations of the new DCU, mixing humor and alternative continuity.
