Sicilian letters: a large duo of actors for an intense thriller (critic)

Last opus of a trilogy on the Sicilian mafia, this black farce carried by Toni Servillo and Elio Germano depicts in style the run of a criminal leader.

After the remarkable Salvo And Sicilian Ghost Story,, The duo of filmmakers Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza concludes his trilogy devoted to the Sicilian mafia by changing the narrative angle again. The gaze is thus less sentimental than in the other films because this time it is a question of treating in the form of a criminal farce the hunt for the last mafia chef on the run.

Taken from the true story of Matteo Messina Denaro, arrested in 2023 after thirty years of fugue, the story focuses on a politician named Catello, who comes out of prison and is approached by Italian secret services in order to trap his own godson Matteo, the famous mafia chief sought. Taken between several fires and trying to look good with the authorities, the sneaky Catello begins a correspondence with this tracked godchild, which logically remains on his guard.

Sicilian letters To the good idea to show how this run, rather than constituting an epic adventure, echoes feelings of generalized forfeiture and moral absurdity at the heart of Sicily which appears as a territory strewn with ruins and emptied of any greatness of soul. Between dreamlike and family weights, filmmakers depict with great stylistic inspiration the ravages of narcissism and rely.

In a state of grace, the two actors perfectly give body to these lonely figures prisoners of a fatality against whom the brilliant Sicilian sun can do nothing.
