Super Mario Galaxy is already a worldwide box office phenomenon
With $372 million in revenue in just a few days, the Illumination and Nintendo film marks the biggest start of the year, following in the footsteps of the Super Mario Bros. phenomenon. the 2023 film.

Mario has taken a star and is already heading straight towards a new record. With $372.5 million at the worldwide box office, including $182.4 million internationally, in just five days of release, Super Mario Galaxy, the movie marks the biggest start of the year 2026. An XXL launch which far exceeds that of Last chance projectAmazon MGM’s space odyssey, which opened to 97.2 million worldwide last March.
This start-up is even in the highlights of Super Mario Bros. the moviewhich launched the machine in 2023 with 171 million internationally and 375 million globally over the same period. The animated sequel is therefore on par, knowing that this first part had passed 1.3 billion dollars in worldwide revenue at the end of its career.
On American soil, Super Mario Galaxy, the movie also activates boost mode with 130 million dollars over its first weekend and 190 million in five days. This is the best domestic start of the year (again ahead of Last chance project which had made 80.5 million), even if the sequel is slightly behind its predecessor, which had accumulated 146 million over the weekend and 204 million in five days.
Internationally, Mario is an even bigger hit with 182.4 million collected in 78 territories, driven in particular by Mexico ($29 million), the United Kingdom and Ireland ($19.7 million), Germany ($15 million) and France ($12 million). According to Universal, the Super Mario saga becomes the only animated franchise to launch two films beyond 350 million dollars worldwide upon their release. Super Mario Galaxy, the movie even offers the fourth best global opening for an animated film, behind Zootopia 2, Moana 2 And Super Mario Bros. the movie.
Driven by family appeal and multi-generational nostalgia around Nintendo, the film seems to retain most of the audience from the first opus according to specialists. With a budget of $110 million, Super Mario Galaxy, the movie is already promised massive profitability for Universal. Even the Imax responds with 22.2 million dollars at the worldwide launch, better than Super Mario Bros. the movie.
Faced with this steamroller, other new products are trying to exist. The black comedy The Dramaworn by Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, starts in third place at the US box office, with 14.4 million dollars on 3,087 screens, a score higher than Materialists and in line with Challengerswhich was aimed at a similar audience.
Internationally, the film adds 13.6 million for a total of 28 million worldwide, an encouraging launch for an R-rated original film budgeted around $28 million.
