The director of Is There a Cop hated the reboot with Liam Neeson
David Zucker torpedoes Is There a Cop to Save the World?, released this summer in cinemas.
Frank Drebin’s father has spoken: Frank Drebin Jr. is not family!
David Zucker, emblematic director of the first two Is there a cop to save the queen? (1988) and Is there a cop to save the president? (1991), aka the saga Naked Gun (in original version), torpedoed the reboot carried by Liam Neeson and released in cinemas this summer.
In a magazine interview Woman’s WorldDavid Zucker admits that he did not appreciate it at all Is there a cop to save the world?
For the 78-year-old filmmaker, the film completely misses what made the magic of the parody comedies created with his brother Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams.
“My brother Jerry and our partner Jim Abrahams started doing spoof comedies 50 years ago. We invented our own style — and we did it so well that it seemed easy, seemingly easy. People started copying it, like Seth MacFarlane for the new ‘Naked Gun.’ And he completely missed it.”
Seth MacFarlane, major producer of the project, contributed to the script while the direction was entrusted to Akiva Schaffer (Lonely Island), who co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.
Zucker also criticizes the budget for the 2025 reboot: $42 million. The 1988 original cost $14.5 million at the time:
“You can’t spend too much money on a comedy. One of our rules is the technical side: big budgets and comedy are opposites. And in the new ‘Naked Gun,’ you can see that they spent a lot of money on scenes full of technical gimmicks trying to copy our style.”
The director ofIs there a pilot on the plane? does not stop there: according to him, this reboot was only motivated by financial considerations.
“Everyone’s doing it for the money now. And I feel like that’s the only reason they wanted to make a new Is There a Cop…”
