The forgotten ones from the 2025 Oscar nominations

The forgotten ones from the 2025 Oscar nominations

Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Selena Gomez, Denzel Washington or Denis Villeneuve are not among the nominees. And it’s (more or less) a surprise!

Daniel Craig for Queer in the Best Actor category

Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, adapted from the work of William S. Burroughs, did not attract the attention of voters, since it is not named anywhere. Too bad for the former James Bond, whose interpretation of William Lee was celebrated by a victory for best actor at the National Board of Review and a nomination for the Golden Globes. He will not be at the 97th ceremony.

Nicole Kidman for Babygirl in the Best Actress category

Crowned Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and the National Board of Review, the Australian star seemed on the highway to land a sixth Oscar nomination. It’s missed and it’s frankly unexpected.

Angelina Jolie for Maria in the Best Actress category

For her too it’s a cold shower. Despite an applauded performance at the Venice Film Festival for her interpretation of opera icon Maria Callas for Pablo Larrain, the American actress was not selected. Even though she worked hard on this demanding biopic, she was a victim of the enormous competition in the category this year.

Pamela Anderson for Last Showgirl in the Best Actress category

The category was also too tough for the former bimbo ofBaywatch who bursts into the screen as this Las Vegas showgirl. But let her take comfort: even her comrade Jamie Lee Curtis, although well placed, was not selected for the second female role.

Selena Gomez for Emilia Pérez in the Best Supporting Actress category

It’s an absence that hurts, when we know that the other actresses in Jacques Audiard’s film are named (Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña). And also that her place was taken by a pop rival turned actress, a certain Ariana Grande for Wicked.

Margaret Qualley for The Substance in the Best Supporting Actress category

She was certainly overshadowed by Demi Moore’s performance in her best role in decades… Too bad because Andie McDowell’s daughter had given herself physically for the job!

Denzel Washington for Gladiator II in the Best Supporting Actor category

There was a huge buzz around Denzel Washington when the film came out. It is true that he is undeniably the best Roman in Ridley Scott’s film. But the Academy didn’t really want to support the peplum, nominated only once for the costumes (and not even for the sets!).

Denis Villeneuve for Dune 2 in the Best Direction category

Certainly the Canadian filmmaker is paying for the early theatrical distribution (very early 2024) of his film. A year later, the memory of Dune 2 is far away. Too bad the voters forgot the frankly spectacular staging of the most epic sci-fi film of recent years.

Edward Berger for Conclave in the Best Direction category

Eight nominations, including Best Film, but nothing for the German filmmaker, forgotten from the list as he was two years ago when Nothing new in the West had received 4 nominations and won the award for Best Foreign Film, without him being mentioned.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Challengers in the Best Music category

Clearly, Luca Guadagnino was not in the Academy’s good books this year. Nothing for Queer and nothing for Challengers neither. Not even the heady music of Reznor and Ross, which has since met with great success with the public and has established itself as a staple of gym playlists all over the world!
