They are remaking Amadeus in series: trailer
The rivalry between Mozart and Salieri, revised and corrected for the small screen.
We all remember Milos Forman’s film, an absolute masterpiece from 1984. But this time, it’s British television that is resurrecting Amadeus.
Sky unveils the trailer for a new series, which will tell in its own way – it is not a remake of the film – the most famous rivalry in the history of music (see below).
Will Sharpe plays Mozart, opposite Paul Bettany as Salieri.
Adapted from the play by Peter Shaffer (already the source of the film’s screenplay) and rewritten by Joe Barton (Black Doves), this five-episode series will tell the meteoric rise and tragic fall of the Viennese genius. The synopsis:
“When Amadeus, aged 25, arrives in the bustling Vienna of the 18th century, he is no longer the child prodigy of yesteryear and aspires to total creative freedom. His destiny then intersects two decisive figures: his future wife, the loyal Constanze Weber, and the deeply religious court composer, Antonio Salieri. As Amadeus’ genius blossoms despite his demons interiors, his sulphurous reputation and the distrust of the conservative environment, Salieri is more and more tormented by what he perceives as an unjust divine gift. To him, Amadeus becomes a threat—to his talent, his reputation, and even his faith in God. What begins as a simple professional rivalry turns into an intimate and all-consuming obsession, spanning thirty years, including a murder confession and a final desperate attempt to inscribe his name forever in the legend of Mozart.”
Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin) plays Constanze Weber, while Rory Kinnear plays Emperor Joseph II.
The Amadeus series will be broadcast in December across the Channel on Sky. No French broadcaster yet.
