This “too woke” Netflix military series that infuriates the Pentagon
“Under the presidency of Donald Trump and the leadership of Pete Hegseth, the American military wants to return to a warrior ethic!”
It’s a series that has been causing a sensation on Netflix for a few days: Boots tells the story of the harsh and unpredictable world of the US Marine Corps in the 90s, at the time when it was illegal to be homosexual in the army. We follow Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer), a lost and secretly gay young man, and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine, both about to join a group of recruits. The series, released on October 9 on the platform, is among the most watched content of the moment. And that doesn’t please Uncle Sam’s army at all.
Boots is even described as “woke trash” by US military officials, commenting in Entertainment Weekly.
Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson even took the opportunity to denounce what he considers to be Netflix’s “ideological agenda” and he goes far:
“Under the presidency of Donald Trump and the leadership of Pete Hegseth, the United States military is returning to a warrior ethic! Our standards are elite, uniform and independent of gender or sexual orientation. We will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix which constantly produces and broadcasts this type of woke content to its audience and to children.”
It must be said that Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense in the Trump administration 2, former soldier and former host at Fox News, has been criticized in the past for his anti-LGBTQ actions. In June, he ordered that the name of “Harvey Milk,” the slain politician, LGBTQ rights activist and former Marine, be removed from a U.S. Navy ship.
Inspired by former Marine Greg Cope White’s book, The Pink Marine, the Boots series is worn by Miles Heizer, who is himself homosexual. And he explains that he found a personal experience in his role: “I went through a classic coming out, unfortunately very painful. My sister, who is my best friend, didn’t care at all and supported me, my friends too… But at the time, with my Christian upbringing, it was a real nightmare.”
Netflix has not yet responded to the Pentagon’s criticism.
