Venom 3: who is Knull and what do the post-credits scenes reveal?
Eddie Brock’s adventures seem to be over, but a door has opened…
Warning, this article contains spoilers Venom: The Last Dance
As promised, The Last Dance offered a true conclusion to the trilogy. Venom sacrificed himself to save the universe from the threat of the super-villain Knull in a quite moving finale. In the last scene, we see Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) going to New York to see the Statue of Liberty, as desired by his symbiote and best friend. But is it really over?
In superhero cinema, you always have to leave a door open, and Venom 3 is no exception to the rule. We may not see Tom Hardy and Venom on screen again, but Kelly Marcel’s film offers several narrative possibilities.
If Venom is dead, other symbiotes are still in the wild. Starting with that of Juno Temple who plays Dr. Payne in the film, a scientist doing research for the government on these extraterrestrial creatures. Her symbiote has the particularity of being endowed with super speed thanks to the lightning that struck her when she was a child.
In a post-credits scene revealed at the very end of the endless credits (and which you may have missed), we also find the character of the bartender played by Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso) who was arrested at the beginning of the film by Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor). He survived the terrible battle against the xenophobes which resulted in the destruction of Area 51, undoubtedly thanks to the piece of symbiote that Eddie had left on his counter.
As a bonus, we see a cockroach enter a broken vial which contained a symbiote and take a small discharge. Are you ready for the Venom the Insect spin-off?
The other post-credits scene, which happens earlier, shows us that Knull has not said his last word. Dubbed by Andy Serkis, who directed the 2nd film, Venom: Let There Be Carnagethe ugly song releases a very menacing threat: “Your champion has fallen, the King in Black is awake. Your world will burn, and you will watch.“
But who is Knull exactly?
A character who appeared relatively recently in the comics, Knull is the creator of the symbiotes. After a rebellion, he found himself imprisoned on the planet Klyntar and seeks revenge. In the film, we are told that he is older than the universe, and has the potential to be one of Marvel’s most powerful villains.
Not sure we’ll ever see him again on screen. Sony Pictures does not plan to continue developing the Venom universe in cinema, unless this introduction is a preparation for Spider-Man 4whose scenario is still in development?
“She’s a really massive character, so we might see her again“, director Kelly Marcel explained at New York Comics Con. “It’s just a little taste of Knull. We get to know him. Who knows what the future holds for him.“
