Video premium will use AI for its films and series dubbing

Twelve films for the Latin American market are currently concerned.

Relayed by theAFP, Amazon has announced that he wanted to lift twelve series and films from their streaming platform without dubbing actors, but using artificial intelligence. In the list, we find in particular Mi Mama Lora (2016, above in illustration photo), Long lost (2018) and The legend of the cid (2003).

“The dubbing made by an AI makes it possible to offer in several languages insufficiently popular films for usual dubbing to be justified economically”explain the managers of Amazon, who specify that it only concerns this dozen works intended for the Latin American market, and that these dubbing will be in English and Spanish. The group ensures that “Professionals will control the quality of dubbing before putting online” and add:

“To make its vast streaming bookstore accessible to more users, Prime Video will start to offer dubbing with AI on films and series that would not have been doubled elsewhere (implied by human actors). “

After having been used for advertisements or creators’ videos on YouTube – which can be automatically translated from English to French, German, Japanese, Hindi, Spanish, etc. – Full dubbing by IA should therefore arrive very soon on the platform for the first time on fictions. As well as its competitors? L’AFP wanted to question the managers of Netflix on this subject, but the firm did not wish to react.

With this decision, will the studio make again scandal? At the start of the year, tests had been carried out by Amazon on the action film Armorwith Sylvester Stallone. Light Ventures had Recreated by the voice of actor Alain Dorvalwho had doubled the American star about thirty times before his death in February 2024. The case that led to strong reactions, the firm quickly announced that it had appealed to a real duplicator for this film, Michel Vignéwho had also lent his voice to Stallone in the past. In a statement, she concluded at the end of January that the final decision would return to Alain Dorval’s family: “We have agreed that if the quality bar is not respected, the film will be released with traditional dubbing – the family retains total control and will decide if and how this dubbing IA is used”. A confirmed clarification on Checknews by Aurore Bergé, the daughter of Alain Dorval: “They wrote black on white that no commercial vocation existed. So the film will be released with an actor for dubbing”.

In France, dubbing actors are mobilized to defend their profession in front of AI. Especially via movement #Touchpasàmavfand the petition that has just been launched. But the development of software accelerates. Release quotes Deepdub, a start-up that offers “Already very successful products, it can for example modulate the character’s accent in a given language.”
