The veil rises on the mystery surrounding the death of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. And the conclusions of the local authorities are quite disturbing.

The legendary actor probably died about a week after his wife, who died in Hantavirus, according to a report by the medical examiner published on Friday (via Variety).

Hackman died of cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as an important contributory factor, said Heather Jarrell, chief medical examiner of the office investigator of the New Mexico.

But when he made a cardiac arrest, he was alone in his house, living with the body of Betsy Arakawa, who died about a week earlier, on February 11, from Hantavirus.

What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a potentially deadly virus transmitted by rodents. Erin Phipps, state veterinarian of the state, said that infections in the Hantavirus were very rare. Out of 136 cases detected in the state over the past 50 years, 42 % have been fatal. The virus is mainly transmitted via rodent excrement.

During a press conference on Friday, Santa Fe sheriff Adan Mendoza said that surveillance cameras showed Arakawa running on February 11, especially at the market and the pharmacy. We don’t know what the dog died yet. But the investigation is obviously closing. The two deaths are therefore considered natural causes by the authorities.
