Will Deadpool & Wolverine revive superhero movies in theaters?
For Marvel boss Kevin Feige, the signals are very encouraging.
After a series of failures (Ant-Man 3, The Marvels…), the MCU intends to get off to a good start with Deadpool & Wolverine. If superhero fatigue is an inevitable phenomenon, already seen in bookstores, according to the creator of The Boys Eric Kripke, the boss of Marvel Studios, is planning to get the machine going again with his huge summer blockbuster. Kevin Feigethere is no miracle recipe:
“I never really believed in superheroes as a genre in itself. Originally, we already made films based on a very visual narrative format, but we always made different types of films” explains the producer in Deadline, who refutes the idea of a more biting Marvel Universe after Deadpool & Wolverineto boost the franchise: “No, because I think we’ve been biting in the past. In my opinion, we have to be able to cover all genres and all tones.”
For Kevin Feigethe superhero film must respond to the same issues as traditional films: “You have to make things that are worth seeing in a movie theater, that are worth getting in their car and driving to. Because there’s a whole bunch of entertainment out there that people can scroll through on their screens in their pockets. So the Hollywood industry has to create a product that stands above all of that and represents a form of entertainment that you don’t see anywhere else.”
The Marvel boss thus sees in the historic success of Inside Out 2this summer, a very positive sign”incredibly exciting, because it reminds people what a joy it is to go to the movies. And I think people are already very excited about Deadpool & Wolverine on the big screen. This experience should make people want to come back to the theaters, should encourage them to go back to the cinema again.”
After Deadpool & WolverineMarvel will release its next film in 2025. It will be Captain America: Brave New WorldFebruary 12 in France.
