28 years later: Danny Boyle filmed the sequel to the iPhone 15!

The most expensive film in history ever shot with a smartphone.

Technology has evolved and 28 years later is filmed via a smartphone. The director Danny Boyle and the director of photography Anthony Dod MantleOscar winners for Slumdog Millionairedecided to shoot the sequel to the horror saga with an iPhone 15 Pro Max. But not quite like you and I when we make a holiday movie.

The phone was heavily boosted by professional accessories, reports WIRED, which explains that the filming of 28 years later began in May 2024 and ended in late July. The use of smartphones was kept secret and team members were asked to sign confidentiality agreements about it.

However, a photo taken on set, presumably by paparazzi, was released. Upon close inspection of the camera, it was deduced that Boyle and Mantle had placed a smartphone inside a protective cage. WIRED reports that multiple people associated with the film have confirmed that 28 years later was filmed with an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

A process that fits with the story of Doyle and Mantle’s collaboration, who used a Canon XL-1 to shoot 28 days later in 2003, which at the time became one of the first films to use this type of camera.

Still, movies made with smartphones are usually low-budget projects. With its $75 million production, 28 years later could well be the first blockbuster and the most expensive film in history, filmed with an iPhone.

Cillian Murphy will be back in the cast, also with Jodie ComerRalph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

28 years later will be released in theaters on June 20, 2025.
