30 years after his last film role, Rick Moranis shares how he came out of retirement

“I really started to enjoy it again,” confides the comic actor who retired from Hollywood at the end of the 1990s to raise his children alone after the death of his wife.

Nearly thirty years after leaving the sets, Rick Moranis is finally coming out of retirement. The unforgettable performer of “Dark Helmet”, a parody of Darth Vader, will find his cult character in Spaceballs 2and the actor admits that this return in front of the camera had a destabilizing effect, to say the least.

The Canadian actor, who had not appeared in a live-action feature film since Honey, we’ve been shrunk in 1997, will reprise his iconic role in Spaceballs 2: The New One. Guest of San Diego Comic-Con, he returned to this unexpected experience, almost forty years after the original film.

“I kept pinching myself when watching Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman or George Wyner. And then there were all these young actors. I realized I was their age 39 years ago, when we made the first film. Today, it is my children who are this age…“, he says.

The actor says he felt like he was going back in time:

“I really felt like I was stuck in a time warp. I was in that costume again, with that helmet… It was very strange, to be honest. Then, little by little, I felt better and better and I really started to enjoy it again..”

The film will bring together several historic faces from the saga, with Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner and Mel Brooks, while Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan join this new adventure directed by Josh Greenbaum.

Rick Moranis retired from Hollywood in the late 1990s to raise his children alone after the death of his wife. Since then, he has only reappeared through a few dubbings, notably in films Brother Bear and the animated series Bob & Doug.

No French release date has yet been announced for Spaceballs 2: The New Oneexpected in American theaters on April 23, 2027.
