Barbie movie banned in Lebanon and Kuwait for ‘promoting homosexuality’
According to the country’s authorities, Barbie “supports the rejection of father’s guardianship, undermines and ridicules the role of the mother and questions the necessity of marriage and the formation of a family”.
He doesn’t really need any help to score. But the movie Barbie will not boost its revenues in several Middle Eastern countries. Lebanon has decided to ban the release of the feature film by Greta Gerwig. Lebanese Culture Minister Mohammad Mortadan made the announcement yesterday (via Reuters) saying that Barbie “promoted homosexuality” and contradicted the values linked to the faith and morality of the country.
A decision that sanctions the very spirit of the film, since the latter does not describe any explicit LGBTQ + relationship.
“Barbie goes against the moral and religious values of Lebanon and promotes homosexuality and gender reassignment, supports the rejection of father’s guardianship, undermines and ridicules the role of the mother and questions the necessity of marriage and the formation of a family”writes the Lebanese minister to justify his decision.
A censorship which will also be applied in neighboring Kuwait, for the same reasons.
Barbie surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue and was originally scheduled to be released in Lebanon from August 31.
