Christian Bale facing Leonardo DiCaprio in Heat 2?

Will the two Hollywood titans be brought together by Michael Mann for the sequel to the cult thriller?

Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio face to face in a Michael Mann film?

What sounds like a movie buff’s fantasy is about to become very real. According to Deadline, the actor The Dark Knight entered into negotiations to join Heat 2a long-fantasized sequel to the 1995 classic by Michael Mann. And if everything is confirmed, it will be a new round between Bale and the filmmaker, fifteen years later Public Enemies.

We don’t yet know what role exactly Christian Bale would play, but it would certainly be the younger version of Neil McCauley (Robert de Niro in The Moose) or Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino).

Leonardo DiCaprio has already been involved in the project for a while, to play Chris Shiherlis, the role played by Val Kilmer in the original. Before Bale, several names had been circulating: Adam Driver, Austin Butler, Bradley Cooper…

Developed since 2023, Heat 2 was initially to be financed and distributed by Warner Bros. But the studio ended up dropping the deal after a disagreement over the budget. A twist last month: Amazon MGM Studios, via United Artists, took over the project and said yes to Mann’s conditions. Filming is scheduled for 2026.

Adapted from the novel written by the director himself, Heat 2 navigates between three eras: 1988, 1995–1996 and 2000. We follow the origins of Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis and Vincent Hanna; the direct consequences of Heat with Vincent stalking Chris around Los Angeles; then a new manhunt in 2000, while Chris works for an international crime family. Their trajectories will eventually cross paths again in LA, for a final face-to-face meeting that is expected to be explosive.
