Dear Killer Nannies: “This is not a glorification of Pablo Escobar, quite the contrary”

He is the son of the cocaine king. And he lived a childhood like no other in the middle of the Medellín cartel. Having taken care to distance himself from this world, Sebastián Marroquín now tells the story of his youth in a new Disney+ series. Meeting with Pablo Escobar’s son.

Today he goes by the name Sebastián Marroquín. But he was born as Juan Pablo Escobar. Because this 49-year-old Colombian is indeed the son of the king of cocaine. A kid raised in the middle of the Medellín cartel in the 1980s. And who did everything to distance himself from Pablo Escobar at the age of 49. To the point of changing his identity after the death of his father, to rebuild himself far from this heritage. To also protect themselves from competitors who wanted to eliminate the heir. This is what he tells today in Dear Killer Nannies, a biopic series like no other – to watch on Disney + – which follows his surreal childhood in the middle of the hitmen responsible for protecting him. We met Pablo Escobar’s son at the Séries Mania festival in Lille. Interview.

PREMIERE: Why did you feel the need for your story to be told in series?
This is the first time that I have agreed to share on screen what I experienced as a child. It was the opportunity to tell my story, my own suffering and everything I learned from this period, having grown up in such an evil environment…

Can a child thrive in such an environment?
No, not really. No one can grow up normally with a life like the one I had as a child. We must detach ourselves from it. Leave.

Does the series accurately reflect what you experienced at the time?
Yes, and it’s very moving for me to see all that again. I feel like I’m perfectly represented. Everything is very precise. The atmosphere of the time corresponds well to the memories I have of it. I had quite a few photos and videos, and we were able to draw on all that. I am very proud of the result.

Were you able to speak with Janer Villareal, who plays you in the series?
Of course. He had lots of very interesting questions about my life, about my perception of the “killer nannies” who surrounded me, how I felt around them. It was essential to understanding how I experienced things.

What do you want people to take away?
The idea is to show that we can overcome our traumas, even when they are inherited from a criminal past. That we can always make the right choices to move forward. And above all, avoid following in my father’s footsteps. This is truly a series about redemption.

Basically, the series explores the weight of a heritage that you ended up rejecting…
Absolutely. That’s exactly what they say. This is not at all a glorification of Pablo Escobar, nor of this way of life. It’s even the opposite: we want to raise awareness and show concretely what happens when we get involved in the business of organized crime.

Are you still afraid for your life?
No, not anymore. I have already lived longer than I expected!

Who is Pablo Escobar to you today? What image do you have of it?
To me, he represents the path that men should never take.
