Mortal Kombat III: a sequel is already in the plans
A screenplay is being written, but director Simon McQuoid doesn’t want to sell the Scorpion skin…
Mortal Kombat II should compete for first place at the US box office this weekend, at Devil wears Prada 2. Projections indicate a launch of around $40 million for the continuation of the saga adapted from fighting video games. An excellent start in sight, which should promise a future for the franchise led by Simon McQuoid.
The idea of a third film is even already on the table. During a presentation at New York Comic Con last year, screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that the New Line studio (owned by Warner Bros.) had already entrusted him with the writing of Mortal Kombat III. The rest is therefore already in sight.
But director Simon McQuoid is much more cautious. Asked by Entertainment Weekly this week, he refuses to sell Johnny Cage’s skin before killing him:
“We knew how we wanted to end this film. But you can’t be too confident. I don’t like to be too sure of myself. You never know how things are going to be received. SoAsk me after the weekend of May 8 and I’ll tell you if we’re making a sequel or not…”
In other words, the existence of a third film is in the pipeline but also depends on the success of the second at the box office. The success already seems to be there, Mortal Kombat III should come to fruition.
McQuoid also assures that he already has a global vision of the potential sequel:
“There is a lot of material to explore, it’s both intimidating and exciting. There is always someone who says: what about this character? It’s an almost endless universe…“
