James Cameron wants to drastically reduce the cost of the next Avatar

Cheaper and faster, this is the new leitmotif of the filmmaker on Pandora.

After having pushed all the limits of the modern blockbuster, James Cameron now wants… to save money. The filmmaker revealed in the Empire podcast that he wanted to drastically reduce the cost and production time of the next parts of the saga Avatar.

Avatar 4 And Avatar 5 are still in the works, but Cameron says he’s currently looking at new manufacturing methods to speed up the process:

These films are horribly expensive and time consuming. I want to make them in half the time and for two-thirds the cost!” says the director.

A colossal goal for a franchise that has become the most lucrative in the history of cinema. Each episode ofAvatar exceeded a billion dollars at the global box office: the first film collected 2.7 billion in 2009, The Way of Water 2.4 billion, while Of Fire and Ashesreleased last year, ended its run at $1.48 billion.

A gigantic score for any studio… but considered a slight decline in performance at Disney, especially given the colossal budget of the film, estimated at $400 million excluding marketing. Cameron therefore seems to want to completely rethink the way he produces his science fiction juggernauts. The director specifies, however, that it will take him “another year” to find out how to achieve this objective.

A prerequisite without a doubt, to be able to continue. Because Disney is starting to become cautious about the sums invested and the rather lukewarm returns generated. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Cameron said he didn’t know if the story would go beyond Of Fire and Ashes. And if the studio finally decides to stop the costs before the last two parts, Cameron is already promising a press conference to reveal what he had planned for the end of the epic: “If we can’t make Avatar 4 and 5, for one reason or another, I’ll tell you what we wanted to do.“Obviously, he has not come to terms with this horrible idea and intends to convince Disney to produce the end of his story on Pandora, even if it means doing it at a lower cost.
