Without glory, The Mandalorian & Grogu takes the lead at the French box office
A decent launch for the Lucasfilm blockbuster, but the weakest start for a Star Wars film in France since the takeover of the saga by Disney.
The Force isn’t really with Baby Yoda.
With 485,000 entries recorded since its release, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu took the lead at the French box office this week. The science fiction blockbuster from Lucasfilm got off to a good start, in a combined 582 theaters. A solid first week, but which remains behind the beginnings of Solo: A Star Wars Storyin 2018, which attracted 531,000 spectators during its first week before ending its French career at 1.5 million admissions.
The new Star Wars also takes off very far from the scores achieved not The Rise of Skywalker. In 2019, Episode IX already had 1.88 million tickets sold at the same stage, with a larger audience of 710 theaters, ending up with more than 6 million admissions in France. Actually, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu quite simply achieves the worst start for a film in the franchise in France, in the 21st century.
This nevertheless remains more than enough to relegate the biopic dedicated to Michael Jackson to second place in the ranking.
The musical film suffered a huge drop in attendance of 70%, a direct result of the end of the holidays and long weekends. Despite everything, it still attracts 340,000 new spectators for its fifth week and is now approaching 5 million cumulative admissions.
A score already higher than the final total of Bohemian Rhapsodywho ended his French career with 4.3 million tickets sold.
In third place, The Devil Wears Prada 2 he also continues his very good journey. The sequel by Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep still attracts nearly 200,000 spectators in its fourth week of operation, despite a significant drop of 68%.
The film now has 2.5 million admissions, almost twice as many as the first opus at the same stage in 2006 (1.6 million) and already above the final score of the original film, which ended at 2.1 million tickets sold.
As for French cinema, The Electric Venus experienced a sudden fall. After a start boosted by its Cannes exhibition where she made the Opening, the historical comedy carried by Anaïs Demoustier lost 65% of its admissions this week with 110,000 tickets sold in nearly 600 theaters.
The film nevertheless reached 430,000 cumulative spectators.
Finally, among the new releases of the week, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film has had a particularly disappointing start. Autofiction attracted only 75,000 spectators for its first week (AVP included).
We are very far from the 220,000 entries made by The Woman Next Door during its launch in 2024, before a final career of 650,000 tickets sold in France.
