28 Years Later should film its third part next year
Danny Boyle gives reassuring news of the last part on stand-by.
Fans of the zombie saga were starting to worry. With only $58 million collected at the worldwide box office, 28 Years Later: The Temple of the Dead largely disappointed after the 151 million (already not great) garnered by 28 years later. Enough to raise doubts about the future of the franchise imagined by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
But the British director has just provided a rather encouraging update. Interviewed by JoBlo, Boyle assures that plans for the next film are already well advanced:
“The story is set in a region of Britain where filming can only be done at certain times of the year. We literally ran out of time this year. So we will tour, at least we hope, next year. But the enthusiasm is still there and Alex has written a fantastic script.”
Statements which confirm that the project was never abandoned despite the disappointing performances of the last opus. For the moment still without an official title, this third chapter should notably mark the true return of Cillian Murphy, hero of the original film released in 2002. The Oscar-winning actor only made a brief appearance in The Temple of the Deada presence thought of as an introduction to a much more important role in the sequel.
If the box office has dampened the studio’s ambitions, the franchise nevertheless continues to enjoy real success on streaming platforms, where the various films regularly appear among the most watched programs.
An encouraging sign for this fifth feature film in the saga, currently being written. It now remains to be seen whether the announced return of Cillian Murphy will be enough to convince the studio to produce it.
