Trailer for The Boroughs: The Duffers' Last Stand on Netflix

Netflix cancels The Boroughs, the other Duffer brothers series

Launched in the wake of the end of Stranger Things, the new science fiction series produced by Ross and Matt Duffer will ultimately not have a season 2.

Bad news for fans of The Boroughs. There will be no season 2.

Netflix has decided to cancel the series after just one season, putting a premature end to this new project led by the creators of Stranger Things.

Put online in May 2026, a few months after the conclusion of the phenomenon series, The Boroughs followed a group of retirees confronted with a supernatural threat. In this retirement home like no other, the residents had to unite to prevent a mysterious force from stealing the only thing they really no longer had: time.

Worn by Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, Denis O’Hare and Clarke Peters, the series was quickly nicknamed “Stranger Things with elderly people”. An original concept imagined by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, under the supervision of the Duffer brothers.

However, despite a rather solid start with nearly 19 million views during its first 18 days on Netflix, that was not enough. According to American media, the high cost of producing this science fiction series, requiring numerous special effects, would have weighed heavily in the streaming giant’s decision.

The cancellation is all the more brutal as the creators had already imagined a story over three seasons. A writing room was even already working on season 2 before Netflix made the final decision.
