Jurassic World 3 breaks the record for the world’s most expensive film
With an estimated production cost of $658 million, largely weighed down by the pandemic, Universal’s blockbuster would have beaten all Disney films.
Universal stronger than Disney!
Jurassic World: The World After has just broken a not-quite-official record. According to FortuneUniversal Pictures would have spent approximately $658 million to produce the film released in 2022, which would make it the most expensive feature film ever made in the history of cinema.
The information comes from a British tax document obtained by the magazine, which however specifies that the production benefited from a tax credit of 127 million dollars, bringing the net cost to around 531 million.
This colossal budget places Dominion (from its original title) in front Star Wars: The Force Awakenswhich held this title until then, thanks to Disney which had spent around 447 million (after tax rebates).
Behind, we find other Disney: Avatar (425 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Fountain of Youth (379 million) or even Avengers: Endgame (356 million).
Spectacular inflation for Jurassic World: The World Afterlargely fueled by filming in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, with several months of confinement for the actors in a hotel near Pinewood Studios, transformed into a health bubble.
Long estimated at around $265 million, the film’s actual budget is a reminder above all of the extent to which Hollywood figures remain opaque, between post-production, reshoots and marketing expenses that are rarely integrated in a transparent manner.
The film still generated $1 billion at the worldwide box office and remains profitable. But it was less profitable than expected, which could explain the 2025 reboot, Jurassic World: Rebirthwith a new headliner named Scarlett Johansson and a much better controlled budget (a priori) around 260 million dollars…
