Ballerina 2: a sequel 10 years later for the little Parisian dancer
A new animated film is planned and even a spin-off series.
Ten years later, she will wear her pointe shoes again.
Ballerina is preparing to return to our screens and expand its universe. Nothing to do with John Wick and its already forgotten spin-off. We are talking here about the original French animated film, directed by Eric Summer and Éric Warin, released in 2016, and which attracted nearly 1.8 million spectators to theaters in France and generated around $110 million in revenue worldwide.
The company Good Hero (founded by Grégory Ouanhon and Laurent Zeitoun) is taking over the license and the sequel will be directed by Laurent Zeitoun, who also wrote the screenplay. Ballerina 2 will see the return of Gaumont, both French distributor and international seller. Its release is currently announced for the end of 2029.
The film is a continuation of the first opus, which told the story of a young Breton orphan who left for Paris at the end of the 19th century to realize her dream of becoming a dancer at the Opera.
In a press release (via Le Film Français), the producers explain that they want to extend a story whose themes continue to resonate: “Ballerina’s inspiring story of female empowerment has continued to resonate with new audiences over the past decade. The film embodies following your dreams, surpassing yourself, hard work and the power of artistic expression.”
On the Gaumont side, we emphasize the international dimension of the franchise: “Ballerina remains one of the best-performing independent animated films at the global box office, with universal themes capable of reaching multiple generationss.”
In parallel with the feature film, Good Hero is also developing a spin-off series written by British screenwriter Andrew Burrell, as well as a version designed for digital platforms and YouTube.
A multi-format strategy that confirms the desire to transform Ballerina in a true global family franchise.
