The biopic on Joséphine Baker has started filming
Maïmouna Doucouré directs FKA twigs in this feature film produced by StudioCanal.
After Charles Aznavour, Édith Piaf and even Dalida, another French icon will be entitled to his biopic.
FKA twigs will play Joséphine Baker in a film written and directed by the multi-awarded Maïmouna Doucouré (Cute, Hawaii), with Olivier Lorelle as co-writer.
StudioCanal has just announced the start of filming and details in the synopsis what this film will tell “the incredible destiny of the incomparable Joséphine Baker. It will explore her rise to international stardom in 1920s Paris, her involvement in the French Resistance and her involvement in the American civil rights movement, revealing the courageous, complex and extraordinary woman who hid behind the legend.”
The studio also specifies Joséphine Baker’s crazy journey: “Coming from a childhood marked by racial segregation and difficulties, the young Joséphine Baker left America in the 1920s to find her artistic freedom in the Paris of the Roaring Twenties, where she became one of the biggest stage and cinema stars of her time. In 1951, when she returns to perform in the United States as a celebrity and World War II heroine, Josephine must confront the contradictions of her fame and the injustice she once fled.“
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Giuseppe Maggio, Gregory Montel, Benjamin Millepied, Feodor Atkine, Alex Lutz and Harmony Riley complete the cast.
The movie Josephine Baker is produced by StudioCanal and Bien ou Bien Productions, with CPB and Leyland Films as associated producers, and with the support of Joséphine Baker’s sons (Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker) as well as her rainbow tribe.
No release date has been announced yet.
