Why Sandra Bullock quit romantic comedies

Asked about times when she intentionally steered her career in a specific direction, Bullock cites only two. The first dates back to her beginnings, when she lived in New York and went through auditions to get her first roles.

“I was in New York, working as a waitress and auditioning for all kinds of perverts who were asking me to take my pants down. I said to myself: No, this role is not for me! I was making my way. Every working actor or actress is afraid of never working again; so we take what comes our way and make the most of it...”

The second defining moment in Sandra Bullock’s career came a few years later, when she was already a box office star:

“That’s maybe the only time I was really made an intentional choice in my career. When I said to myself: I have to stop romantic comedies now! Because I was getting so upset about those films…“

Indeed, after being revealed in Demolition Man (1993) then exploded in Speed (1994), Sandra Bullock has a series of projects and especially finds success in romantic comedies. She stands out with Love at all costs in 1995 (against Bill Pullman), before following up with For the love of art in 1996 (against Denis Leary), A wind of madness in 1999 (facing Ben Affleck) or even Love without notice in 2002 (against Hugh Grant). She had also demonstrated her comedic potential in Miss Detective in 2000, while already exploring other registers with The Bewitchers.

“I accepted a role in a film called Collision. I wanted to start showing other sides of my game…” remembers Sandra Bullock.
