First day box office: The Marie-Claire Affair beats Godzilla
The French drama is ahead of the Japanese blockbuster Godzilla Minus Zero and Didier Bourdon in Bon Patron.
It’s a film for history which had the best start of the week’s new releases.
Directed by Lauriane Escaffre and Yvo Muller, The Marie-Claire Affair takes us back to November 1972, to the Bobigny trial. Carried by Charlotte Gainsbourg in the role of Gisèle Halimi, the drama returns to this historic moment in the fight for the right to abortion in France. It takes the lead in new releases with 35,000 admissions in more than 450 theaters, helped by nearly 14,000 preview spectators. A good launch, which however remains far from the scores of Simone, the trip of the centurywhich had a first day of 142,000 admissions (including 105,640 in preview) in 2022 to finish at almost 2.5 million.
Godzilla Minus Zero makes two
The French drama is ahead of the Japanese blockbuster Godzilla Minus Zero. Continuation of Godzilla Minus Onethe film already has nearly 20,000 spectators, including 4,000 in previews. We remember that the first part started with around 17,000 admissions during its very first limited release, over two days (December 7 and 8, 2023), in 57 theaters, before ending its career with nearly 200,000 tickets sold.
Didier Bourdon, boss on the podium
In third position, we find French comedy A good boss. Carried by Didier Bourdon, the film by Philippe de Chauveron (What have we done to the Good Lord?) displays 16,000 entries after its first day, including previews. This is far below the score of It was better tomorrowwhich had more than 50,000 spectators after its first day last year, thanks to 25,000 preview tickets, before ending its career with nearly 900,000 admissions.
The best average for Wild Horse Nine
At the same level, we find Wild Horse Nine. Despite its excellent reviews and the buzz around John Malkovich, Martin McDonagh’s new thriller also has a little over 16,000 admissions, including previews. It’s less than 3 Billboards: The Vengeance Panelswhich had achieved 25,000 admissions for its first day of operation in France, when it was released in 2018. This is also lower than the start of Banshees of Inisherin : 18,000 entries, including 3,600 in preview in 2022. But Wild Horse Nine was only released in 220 theaters and still had the best average for this Wednesday, with 59 admissions per copy.
Discreet output for Club Kid
Finally, in fifth position, we find Club Kid. Jordan Firstman’s little gem, distributed in only 169 theaters, has fewer than 9,000 admissions, including 2,000 in previews.
