Aaron Sorkin already describes the outlines of The Social Network 2
The screenwriter is writing a film about the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, which he largely blames on the excesses of Facebook, accepted by Mark Zuckerberg.
Will there be a sequel to The Rise of Mark Zuckerberg? In the pipeline for years, The Social Network 2 is not yet completely official, but the screenwriter Aaron Sorkin seems to be thinking deeply about Facebook and its consequences.
During a recent appearance on The Town podcast with Matthew Belloni, the screenwriter of The Social Network has confirmed that he is writing a film about the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, which nearly overthrew American democracy. And the Oscar-winning author believes that part of the responsibility lies directly with Facebook:
“I blame Facebook for January 6. But you'll have to buy a movie ticket to find out why”teases the screenwriter without giving precise details about his upcoming film.
Concretely, Aaron Sorkin finds that the algorithm Facebook tends to promote increasingly controversial content over the years, leading many people to switch. And the fault lies with Mark Zuckerberg for the screenwriter of The Social Network :
“Facebook has, among other things, adjusted its algorithm to promote the most controversial content possible. Because that's what will increase engagement and because that's what will take you to what they call the hallways of Facebook, that endless scroll of content. There's supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity, but that's not the case in reality. It's just growth that interests them. So if Mark Zuckerberg wakes up tomorrow and realizes that there's nothing he couldn't buy for $120 billion that he couldn't buy for $119 billion, he might adjust his integrity and slow down the growth of Facebook, even if it means earning a little less…”
It remains to be seen how the film will turn out and if David Fincher will make it happen!
