After Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy’s next role is revealed
The Irish actor will open the 74th Berlinale with Small Things Like These.
Freshly crowned at the Golden Globes, Cillian Murphy is heading towards his first Oscar for Best Actor for Oppenheimer, one of the great films of 2023. His next feature film will once again be an event since Small Things Like These will open the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 15.
We also discover the first official photo of this Irish historical drama, based on the novel by Claire Keegan (2021). Cillian Murphy will play Bill Furlong, a coal merchant who discovers a terrible, dark secret about his town’s convent.
We are excited to finally announce the opening film of the 2024 Berlinale: The festival will open with the world premiere of “Small Things Like These” by Tim Mielants, starring Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, and Emily Watson!

“The story takes place at Christmas in 1985, when Bill Furlong (Murphy), a devoted father and coal merchant, discovers surprising secrets kept by his town’s convent, as well as some shocking truths of his own. The film reveals truths about Ireland’s Magdalen laundries – horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s to 1996, ostensibly to reform “fallen young women”.
Directed by Tim Mielants, Small Things Like These Also cast are Emily Watson, Michelle Fairley, Ciarán Hinds, Clare Dunne and Eileen Walsh. No release date yet scheduled in France.
