AI to make cheaper films? The boss of Sony Pictures opens the door
A strategy is being considered within the studio, with the idea of lowering production costs, which are now too high.
In an industry still tense by last year's strike and the concern of professionals regarding the place that could takeArtificial intelligence in a few years, the boss of Sony Pictures throws a wrench into the mix!
The studio behind the films Spidermanamong others, intends to use theAIwith a specific idea in mind: to save money. Tony Vinciquerra, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment loves technology and makes it known. At an investor event hosted by Sony on Thursday in Japan (via IndieWire), Vinciquerra confirmed:
“We are seriously looking into theAI. The biggest problem in filmmaking today is expenses. We will look for ways to produce films for theaters and television screens more efficiently, primarily usingAI.”
In other words, to lower its exploding production costs, Sony Pictures will have no hesitation in resorting toAIif theArtificial intelligence allows you to gain productivity.
Comments that risk raising eyebrows among creatives of all stripes in Hollywood. What the CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment already knows, who remembers that “we had an 8 month strike over theAI Last year” and who recalls that his studio is part of the negotiations with IATSE (the American union of entertainment professionals) which are currently taking place “and which still relate to the use of AI“. Tony Vinciquerra knows the subject, he knows that it is sensitive, but he clearly does not want to refrain from using new technologies: “The agreements from last year's strikes and the agreements from the IATSE (negotiations) will define roughly what we can do with theAI” he specifies.
