Argylle crashes into a stricken American box office
Expected to be the Messiah, Matthew Vaughn’s film failed to save American theaters from an increasingly worrying apathy.
It had been several weeks since any major blockbuster hit American theaters, so Wonkathe latest Jason Statham and the remake of Mean Girls have been occupying a very dull podium for the US box office for three weeks. So the release of Argylea big action and spy comedy, supported in particular by Henry Cavill And Dua Lipa should make it possible to restart the machine. But the rescue failed.
Argyle took first place in the ranking, but with a very modest score of 18 million dollars after three days of operation and only 35 million dollars worldwide! A crash-like launch for Matthew Vaughn, after the bitter failure of The King’s Man in 2021 (in a pandemic context). A crash also for the Apple studio, which had pulled out all the stops to boost the release of its potential blockbuster, and which had free rein, without any competition, to make a hit. But as with Napoleon ($218.4 million worldwide) and Killers of the Flower Moon ($156.4 million), Argyle did not attract crowds.
And it’s finally the religious series The Chosenwhich was able to take advantage of this lethargy, to make a nice move by taking second place, with the first episodes of its season 4, exceptionally released in theaters, gleaning 6 million dollars on arrival.
The industry’s biggest concern is market apathy. The cumulative total of the top ten films in the ranking amounts to just 52.1 million dollars over the weekend after 45.7 million for the previous one. Very low box office, linked to the small number of important films currently being released in theaters, a consequence of the 2023 strike which paralyzed Hollywood for months.
