Asterix and Obelix in the service of his Majesty: Edouard Baer, the good pick of the film (review)

Guillaume Gallienne as Jolitorax and Vincent Lacoste as Goudurix are not bad either.

France 2 program this Sunday Asterix and Obelix in the service of his Majestya film for the whole family directed by Laurent Tirard (Le Petit Nicolas) with Edouard Baer in the costume of the famous Gaul. When it was released in 2012, Première appreciated the show. Since then, however, we have preferred the two animated films by Alexandre Astier. Here is our review:

After the catastrophic Asterix at the Olympic Games, the reins of the franchise were entrusted to Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc (Fidélité Films), who immediately brought Laurent Tirard into the loop, with whom they had honorably adapted Le Petit Nicolas. From the first sequences, we understand that a considerable effort has been made to restore the saga to its bubbles of nobility: fun and coherent storyline, chiseled dialogues, impeccable artistic direction (stylization as effective as it is subtle)… Tirard successfully works to unravel everything that was done in the previous episode, a gigantic marketing enterprise without soul or signature. Like Alain Chabat before him, the director relies on a homogeneous cast where the slightest supporting role is played by a big name (Catherine Deneuve, Dany Boon) or a real movie face (Michel Crémadès, Jean-Michel Lahmi). Above all, he finds in Édouard Baer the Asterix that we were hoping for: impertinent, killjoy, resolute. This is the very good pick of the film, just like Guillaume Gallienne in Jolitorax and Vincent Lacoste in Goudurix. After On the Track of Marsupilami, here is a new big production which does not take the spectator for a simple consumer. Something has definitely changed in French comedy.

When Gérard Depardieu was “unbearable” on the set of Asterix at the Olympic Games

The story of Asterix and Obelix in the service of his Majesty: 50 BC. Caesar craves conquest. At the head of his glorious legions he decides to invade this island located at the limits of the known world, this mysterious country called Brittania, Brittany. Victory is rapid and complete. Well… almost. A small Breton village manages to resist him, but its forces are weakening. Cordelia, the queen of the Bretons, therefore decides to send her most faithful officer, Jolitorax, to seek help in Gaul, from another small village, known for its stubborn resistance to the Romans… In the Gallic village in question, Asterix and Obelix are already very busy. The chief has in fact entrusted them with his nephew Goudurix, a young hothead freshly arrived from Lutetia, of whom they are supposed to make a man. And it is far from won. When Jolitorax arrives to ask for help, we decide to give him a barrel of magic potion, and to have him escorted by Asterix and Obelix, but also Goudurix, because this trip seems an excellent opportunity to perfect his education. Unfortunately, nothing is going to go as planned…
