Austin Butler to play Lance Armstrong in new biopic
From Conclave director Edward Berger.
Austin Butler is preparing to put on the yellow jersey.
The actor ofElvis will play Lance Armstrong, a cycling legend whose career and aura were shattered by one of the biggest doping scandals in the history of sport.
The film will be directed by Edward Berger, the Oscar-winning director of Nothing new in the West and of Conclave.
On production, Scott Stuber, former cinema boss at Netflix now moved to United Artists (Amazon group). According to several sources, the project has already sparked a bidding war between studios and platforms.
Armstrong’s story is not new to the screen. In 2015, Ben Foster played him in The Programby Stephen Frears.
Major difference here: Stuber has secured the life rights of the runner, for a more intimate and authorized rereading of the character. The screenplay is entrusted to Zach Baylin, Oscar winner for King Richard. The film should take us back to the dizzying rise – and equally spectacular fall – of an American myth.
Nominated for an Oscar for ElvisAustin Butler comes out of Caught Stealing by Darren Aronofsky and will soon be showing in Enemiesfacing Jeremy Allen White.
Edward Berger is very busy: this biopic project on Lance Armstrong will follow the filming of The Riderswhich he is currently filming with Brad Pitt and Camille Cottin.
