Baldur’s Gate: HBO is preparing an event series with the creator of The Last of Us

A luxurious new video game adaptation is being prepared with Craig Mazin at the helm.

After successfully transposing The Last of Us into an HBO series, creator Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) is diving back into the video game adaptation.

HBO is currently developing a series based on Baldur’s Gate, a monument to the fantasy role-playing game by Hasbro and pillar of the Dungeons & Dragons universe. A very ambitious project entrusted to the showrunner and producer.

The announcement is not trivial. Baldur’s Gate 3, released in 2023, made video game history by winning the five main Game of the Year awards, while exceeding 15 million players. A massive critical and popular success, which put the license back at the center of global pop culture, twenty-five years after the release of the first episode in 1998.

A big fan of the game, Craig Mazin does not hide his personal involvement. “After spending nearly 1,000 hours in the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, being able to extend this story is a dream come true,” he says, praising the work of Swen Vincke, Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast. The screenwriter promises a respectful adaptation, nourished by his love of D&D and its abundant characters.

For Francesca Orsi, head of HBO’s drama programs, the equation is obvious: “Her deep and long-standing passion for the original work, combined with her remarkable talent for creating immersive universes populated by rich and endearing characters, promises a revolutionary result.” The ambition is there!

No date, no casting, no narrative details yet. But one thing is certain: after zombies and mushrooms, HBO is now focusing on dice and dragons.
