“Mom. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so many other things to tell you. I love you. See you later.”
Born in Toronto in 1954, Catherine O’Hara first gained attention in Second City Televisiona Canadian sketch show which won him his first Emmy Award in 1982.
She also tried her hand at cinema and appeared in After Hours (1985) by Martin Scorsese, before being a hit in Mom I missed the plane (1988) and its sequel, and Beetlejuice (1990). Trompe l’oeil successes for the actress. She slips into her forties and doesn’t land a major role, even if we see her playing Kevin Costner’s sister in the western Wyatt Earp (1994).
After 60, Catherine O’Hara is experiencing an astonishing rebirth. It is undoubtedly the most flamboyant part of his career. From 2015, she returned to the forefront with one of the main roles in the Canadian sitcom Welcome to Schitt’s Creek by Dan and Eugene Levy.
The show was a huge success and earned her prestigious awards: an Emmy Award, a SAG Award and even a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy. During the Emmys, she declared:
“I will always be grateful to Eugene and Daniel Levy for the opportunity to play a woman of a certain age, my age, who has the opportunity to completely be herself.”
Catherine O’Hara then becomes essential again. We see it in the cinema in Argyle and the continuation of Beetlejuice. On television, she appears in The Last of Us and she plays the hilarious Patty Leigh in the series The Studio by Seth Rogen, with a new Golden Globe nomination to boot.
Seth Rogen, who had just started filming season 2, also paid tribute to him in a message posted on his Instagram account:
“I told O’Hara when I first met her that I thought she was the funniest person I had ever had the chance to see on screen. Mom, I Missed the Plane is the film that made me want to make films. Working with her was a true honor. She was hysterical, kind, intuitive, generous… I wanted our show to live up to her presence. I am devastated. We were all lucky to live in a world where it existed.“
