Despicable Me 4 is a huge hit at the US box office

The sequel to Gru’s life almost broke the Minions’ all-time record for a July 4th weekend across the Atlantic.

Animated films are all the rage in the United States right now! Despicable Me 4 has just taken the lead at the US box office, with 122 million dollars in five days (75 million since Friday). Gru’s latest adventure was released on Wednesday, exceptionally, due to the July 4 holiday weekend, an American national holiday. A historically high score, since Despicable Me 4 comes to tickle the historical record of Minions (123 million in 2015), the biggest opening for a July 4th weekend at the US box office. A result well above Despicable Me 3which had totaled 100 million in 5 days, at the time of the July 4, 2017 weekend.

Furthermore, the franchise ” Despicable Me » transcends borders and in less than a week, Despicable Me 4 has already totaled 230 million dollars (for a budget of only 100 million). Let us recall that Despicable Me 3 is the only one to have crossed the billion mark (in 2017) while Minions remains the number 1 franchise, with $1.15 billion in worldwide revenue.

Universal and Illumination can smile, especially since they beat rival Disney Pixar. Inside Out 2 falls to second place at the US box office. True. But by collecting $30 million more, the sequel already reaches $533.8 million in the United States and $1.2 billion worldwide, thus surpassing… Minions to establish itself as the fifth highest-grossing animated film in history.

It is difficult for others to exist. And yet, the most adult A Quiet Place: Day 1 still allows Paramount to resist: 21 million dollars during its second weekend which allows it to remain on the podium and to total 95 million dollars of receipts across the Atlantic.

Finally, it should be noted that the A24 horror film, MaXXXinehad a very strong debut, with $6.7 million in its opening. The film has already done almost as well as Pearl And Xwhich have totaled around $10 million in revenue each (in 2022).
