Despite Jurassic World and Superman, the public shunned theaters in July
Blockbusters have followed one another in recent weeks in French cinemas. But none of them caused massive craze. And in the absence of French success, it is the Bérézina at the hexagonal box office.
Been gloomy for cinema in France.
According to CNC estimates, the frequentation of July 2025 reached only 14.8 million admissions for the first month of the long holidays, a drop of 17.3 % compared to July 2024 (17.9 million). A brutal fall, despite a number of weekly outings increasing: 60 films were launched in theaters over five weeks, or 12 new features per week (against 52 films / 10 per week in July 2024).
Suddenly, it is the all year round figures: since January 1, 89.51 million admissions have been recorded, a drop of 13.6 % compared to the first seven months of 2024. Over a slippery year, the drop is 4.1 %. On the market share side, French films retain first place (37.1 %) in front of American films (36.0 %).
Underperforming blockbusters…
However, July did not miss large cartridges, but there are few that have kept their promises. At the top of the monthly ranking, we find Jurassic World: Renaissance (released on July 4), with 2.4 million admissions. Two American productions follow: F1 – The film (1.8 million tickets in July) and Superman (just over 1.2 million admissions in three weeks). The Smurfs – The film exceeds one million in fifteen days. Dragons continued his summer career (950,000 admissions in July, 2.4 million in cumulation) while Elio disappoints with only 700,000 spectators over the month (1.1 million in total), light years from the massive success of Vice-versa 2 (8.5 million last year). Also note the honorable launch of Four fantastic: first steps With more than 670,000 admissions in the first week.
… And a French cinema broken down
Average performances for summer blockbusters, without real popular craze, which have not been offset by French cinema. No comedy with An extra little thing This year. Not Monte-Cristo To save the barrack. The first hexagonal film in July only arrives in the ninth position: it is a question of The piano accidentfrom Quentin Dupieux, with 350,000 admissions.
The rest of the ranking is not very brilliant. Kev Adams in Some love it bald Caps at 170,000 tickets in two weeks. Same score, in three weeks, for soprano in Marius and the Guardians of the Marseille city. As for the highly anticipated thriller 13 days 13 nightshe attracted less than 500,000 spectators in five weeks, despite the support of the film festival at the end of June.
To date, French cinema has squarely made 8 million fewer admissions on the first seven months of 2025, a drop of 20 % compared to 2024.
