Ten years later, the sequel to La Famille Bélier is in development
Soon a reunion of Louane, Karin Viard and François Damiens on screen?
With nearly 7.5 million entries, The Aries Family rises to 34th place among the greatest successes in the history of French cinema. A true popular phenomenon, Eric Lartigau’s film, released at the end of 2014, was also rewarded at the César, with the prize for best female hopeful for Louane. And its American remake, Codawon the Oscar for best film and best adapted screenplay in 2022.
More than ten years later, we learned that a sequel is being developed by Jerico Films & TV, the company of Éric Jehelmann and Philippe Rousselet. In the columns of French filmJehelman explains:
“For ten years, we didn’t really want to make a sequel to this film, since it was closed. But after discussing it with Victoria Bedos, its screenwriter, we found, I think, a very good idea. It is a project that she co-wrote with Louis Pénicaut, as was the case for La plus belle pour aller danser. We are developing it with Studiocanal. With such a cult, generational film, we cannot disappoint. And we are condemned to ensure that this project is not a simple sequel. So you need a very good script to be able to convince this whole family to come back“.
The Aries Family tells the life of a teenager (Louane) daughter of deaf parents (Karin Viard and François Damiens). We know nothing at this stage of the plot, nor of the return of Eric Lartigau to the direction or of the stars of the film in the casting.
Alongside its success, The Aries Family had been the subject of controversy due to the absence of deaf actors and poor use of sign language. Its American remake used deaf actors, including Troy Kotsur who won the Oscar for best supporting actor.
