Diego Luna says goodbye to Andor: “Of course I’m sad, but …”
After a striking film and two acclaimed seasons, the Mexican actor closes the Cassian Andor chapter. With emotion but also a lot of lucidity. Interview.
This is the end of a decade of adventures to Diego Luna in the universe of Star Wars. From Snape Onein 2016, the Mexican actor was intimately linked to revolt against the Empire. But here, the series Andor ends this spring, with its second and last season on Disney +, concluding the narrative arc of a bad boy who has become rebellious who became hero of the Resistance. Cassian Andor leaves, but he leaves behind a powerful heritage. And the galaxy will not forget it anytime soon. Diego Luna Fail farewells in Première.
First: we find Cassian at the start of this season 2, very different from the Cassian we had met in season 1. How do you see his evolution?
Diego Luna: There is still so much to explore before arriving in Cassina de Snape One. At the end of season 1, he chose to join the rebels, but he has not yet fully understood what this implies. He is always in search of meaning, and above all he must find in him the strength to commit completely. What we say this season is the way he transforms his wounds, his anger and his loneliness into something bigger than him. It is over the experiences of season 2 that we understand that he decides to sacrifice everything for the cause. We show how he gains maturity and lucidity. The journey is enormous and that is why season 2 spans four years. There is a lot of things that explain its evolution, both in its way of seeing the world, but also in the galaxy, which becomes more and more complex …
This structure in temporal ellipse, which is therefore spread over 4 years, is quite unprecedented in the universe Star Wars. How did you experience this?
It’s exciting to play, because we really see time spending. We spend a few episodes at a specific moment, then we suddenly advance by a year. And with each jump, the world has changed. The characters have evolved, their links too. Tony Gilroy’s pen is impressive. Nothing is free. Each scene has an echo in the Star Wars universe.
You know the fatal fate that has been waiting for your character from the start. Does that change the way you play?
Let’s say it allows you to put everything back into perspective. When you know the end, each word, each action takes on a different weight. We no longer play for the present only, we also play for the future of the character. It is a chance to be able to embody a character in the long term, to build a complex man, full of contradictions. I was able to explore it in all its facets, and I believe that spectators now know it as well as I am.
Does the series light up Snape One in a new way?
Oh yes, totally. After seeing Andoryou will no longer see Snape One in the same way. Each Cassian decision takes on a new meaning. Season 2 enriches the film a lot. It completes gray areas and in a certain way, each dialogue of Cassian in Snape One is justified by Andor. The season ends just before the start of Snape One… I would like people to continue directly, that they will see the film in the light of everything they have discovered. I think it would deeply change their eyes.
Cassian is a character who has accompanied you for 10 years. Is it difficult to say goodbye?
Of course I am sad to say goodbye. But the timing is good. The time has come. My heart is tight because it is the end of a whole section of my life, because I leave behind a whole team, a whole world. But at the same time, I am delighted that we leave Cassian at a time when he still able to generate a lot of passion among people. He always provides this same excitement and no one is tired. He did not get to a point where he dripped people. Two seasons, it’s long and short at the same time. We stop without having become redundant or repetitive.
And now ? Does the idea of a future without Star Wars you scare you?
No way. I have been doing this job since I was 7 years old, and I learned to let go. Stories have an end, always. I had the luxury of living this exceptional adventure, to play in Snape Oneto come back for Andorand it will always exist. Over time, I learned to manage these transitions very well from one role to another, especially since my private life is essential, it allows me to put the profession into perspective. And then what I turned for Star Wars, Snape One Or Andor, It will always be there somewhere. I always have the opportunity to remember the luck I had to play this hero.
Andor, season 2, in 12 episodes, to see on Disney plus until May 14, 2025.
