Disney will no longer release DVDs and Blu-rays in Australia
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last!
7news.com reveals that Disney will no longer release new releases on DVD and blu-ray after the launch of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in August : “The Walt Disney Company confirms that they are withdrawing from the physical media market in Australia, and that stores in the country, as well as New Zealand, will no longer receive new DVD releases after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We understand that this decision is linked to the drop in physical sales, in parallel with the growing popularity of online entertainment at home, via platforms such as Disney+. GotG Vol. 3 will therefore be the last physical release planned in Australia. The film is expected in stores in August.”

Such a decision could cause upheaval elsewhere in the world, given that the fall in DVD and blu-ray sales is a global phenomenon, which is far from affecting only Australia.
By making this choice, Disney actually intends to push viewers to subscribe to their platform, but this can cause distribution problems: films and series have been removed from Disney +, due to lack of audience, only a few weeks after their broadcast . Notably Willow, the spin-off series from the cult 1986 fantasy film. Viewers fear that by removing physical releases, the firm will only highlight their successes in the future, and eclipse their flops, by making them legally invisible: what will become of the works that will have flopped at the box office and would not be scheduled on Disney +? Will they be visible only by hacking them? The question is all the more worrying since Disney studios also produce Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century films, giving them enormous clout in Hollywood.
