Emerald Fennell Casts Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi for Wuthering Heights

The director of Promising Young Woman is preparing the adaptation of this classic of Gothic literature.

Heathcliff and Catherine finally have a face, that of Jacob Elordi And Margot Robbie. Last July, Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) shared on Twitter a first artistic and macabre visual of his next project – the adaptation of the famous gothic novel, LWuthering Heights (in English : Wuthering Heights), written by Emily Brontë, a year before her death. If the news had generated an open casting on social networks, with Dev Patel at the top of the list, it was finally towards actors she knows well that the British director turned.

Last year, Emerald Fennell directed the actor from Priscilla In Saltburn, a piquant and offbeat satire of the English bourgeoisie. For his second collaboration, he should break this image of a handsome man by playing a character originally described as violent and terrible. Enough to keep the spectators waiting while waiting to find him in another literary and gothic adaptation, that of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, signed Guillermo Del Torro.

As for Margot Robbie, the filmmaker shared the screen with her for a while in Barbiewhere she plays Midge, a pregnant doll and one of Barbie’s oldest friends. Behind the camera, the two women know each other well and have collaborated together on Promising Young Woman And Saltburnsince the actress’s production company, LuckyChap, is behind both feature films. After the success of Greta Gerwig’s film, Margot Robbie is once again setting foot in England, the first since Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (2018).

While the detailed plot of the film is not yet known, it is possible to deduce it from the summary of the original novel.

Published at the time under a male pseudonym so as not to offend public morality, Wuthering Heights features a tale of revenge and a tortured romance between the two main characters: Heathcliff, an orphan adopted by Mr. Earnshaw, and Catherine, his daughter. In the mists of Yorkshire and the Wuthering Heights estate, the tortured characters live in cruelty and madness.

In playing the two lovers, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi follow Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes in the 1992 adaptation, Kaya Scodelario (The Labyrinth) and James Howson in 2011, as well as Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) in a serial version.

Who could join them in this adventure? Jacob Elordi’s playmate in SaltburnBarry Kheogan would not be against the idea, as he confided to Variety : “Anything Emerald does, I’m in. She’s amazing.”

It remains to be seen whether he will actually be part of this adaptation, and who will be the other names added to this new adaptation. All may not be lost for those who wanted to see Dev Patel in this universe.
